The VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering is aimed at learners who are in a full-time Level 2 education programme and wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed junior barber. This qualification also forms part of the intermediate barbering apprenticeship framework which is delivered in the workplace.
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.

Qualification Structure:
This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for barbering and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior barber. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:
- Advise and consult with clients
- Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
- Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
- Cut men's hair using basic techniques
- Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
- Dry and finish men's hair
- Create basic outlines and detailing in hair

Why is this qualification the most suitable?
This is one of two VTCT qualifications in barbering at Level 2. Whilst both qualifications qualify learners to become a junior barber, this qualification requires learners to work in a commercial barber shop/salon whereby assessments must be carried out on real paying clients in line with commercial service times. In contrast, the VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Barbering (QCF) allows learners to gather evidence in a realistic working environment or real working environment without the need for fee paying clients.

The VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering (QCF) is most suitable for learners seeking to work in, and develop their skills in a commercial setting, and can only be delivered by centres that have, or have access to a 'real' barber shop/salon, and not a realistic working environment.

What could this qualification lead to?
Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Graduate Barber (SRGB) with The Hair Council and join the British Barbers' Association. As a junior barber, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:
- commercial barber shops or salons
- specialist African type barber shops/salons
- independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
- television, film, theatre and media
- armed services
- HM prison service
- cruise liners
- hospitals/care homes

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing an advanced apprenticeship or Level 3 qualification in barbering, these include:
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Barbering (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Barbering Studies (QCF)
- VTCT NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Barbering (QCF)
