Overview:
The VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing is aimed at learners who are in a full-time Level 2 education programme and wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed junior hairdresser/stylist. This qualification also forms part of the intermediate hairdressing apprenticeship framework which is delivered in the workplace.
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.

Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to advise and consult with clients and then provide a complete hairdressing service which includes, shampooing and conditioning, colouring, cutting and setting and dressing, and styling and finishing hair. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed.

In addition to completing mandatory units, learners are required to achieve nine credits from optional units which include (this list is not exhaustive): remove hair extensions, relax hair, perm and neutralise hair, plait and twist hair, and temporarily attach hair to enhance a style.

Qualification Structure:
This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for hairdressing and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior hairdresser/stylist. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:
Advise and consult clients
Set and dress hair
Style and finish hair
Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
Cut hair using basic techniques
Colour and lighten hair
Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp

In addition to completing mandatory units, learners are required to achieve nine credits from optional units which include (this list is not exhaustive): remove hair extensions, relax hair, perm and neutralise hair, plait and twist hair, and temporarily attach hair to enhance a style.

Why is this qualification the most suitable?
This is one of two VTCT qualifications in hairdressing level 2. Whilst both qualifications qualify learners to become a junior hairdresser/stylist, this qualification requires learners to work in a commercial hairdressing salon whereby assessments must be carried out on real paying clients in line with commercial service times. In contrast, the VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing (QCF) allows learners to gather evidence in a realistic working environment or real working environment without the need for fee paying clients.

The VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (QCF) is most suitable for learners seeking to work in, and develop their skills in a commercial setting, and can only be delivered by centres that have, or have access to a 'real' hairdressing salon, and not a realistic working environment.

What could this qualification lead to?
Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Graduate Hairdresser (SRGH) with The Hair Council. As a junior hairdresser/stylist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:
- A Commercial Hairdressing Salon
- Independent / self-employed / mobile / home-based settings
- Product manufacturing and training in television, film, theatre and media
- Armed Services
- HM Prison Services

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing an advanced apprenticeship or Level 3 qualification in hairdressing, these include:
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing Studies (QCF)
- VTCT NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing (QCF)
